What is volunteering

Volunteering is the act of giving one’s time and energy to help others or a cause without expecting payment or other personal benefits. It is a selfless act of kindness that aims to make a positive impact on society and the community. Volunteering can take many forms, such as supporting community organisations or non-profits, environmental, assisting in schools or hospitals, and many more.

Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Also, it can give you an opportunity to make friends, learn new skills and gain confidence.

People volunteer for different reasons. Some do it to gain new experiences or skills, to meet new people, or simply to give back to their community. Others volunteer to support a cause they believe in or to help people in need. Whatever their motivation, volunteers play a crucial role in society and make a significant contribution to building a better world. Want to become a volunteer?

Volunteering can be done individually or as part of a group or organisation. It can involve a one-off event or a long-term commitment. Whatever form it takes, volunteering is an essential aspect of civic engagement and community building. It helps to promote social cohesion, strengthen community bonds, and create a sense of shared responsibility and solidarity.

Who can volunteer? Volunteering is open to all.

Why volunteer? There are many reasons why people volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, build your confidence, learn new skills, improve your CV, gain new experiences, help a group or cause you are interested in…and have fun!

The volunteers are the backbone of Bolton’s VCSE sector.  Many organisations rely on volunteers to help them do amazing things such as supporting families, working with refugees, helping environmental groups.

By volunteering, even if it is helping out a few hours a week can make a difference, it can be in a form such as befriending someone, helping in a charity shop, becoming a trustee.  Whatever time and skills you have there is a volunteering opportunity for you.
