Are you an ex machinist, keen sewer or want to learn? We want to hear from you. We will be creating “The People’s Quilt” and want to hear your stories about working in Bolton’s vibrant textile industry. We plan to run a series of textile and multimedia workshops with three main groups, over a period of 11 months, culminating in the production of a large interactive quilt. We will be working with sewers who worked in local factories or keen sewers who just want to get involved. We will also be teaching young people from a local secondary school how to sew and with a group of asylum seekers to design printed fabrics for our final quilt. All three groups will be working together on the “People’s Quilt” for the final 16 sessions. The quilt will include digital elements including embedded microchips playing audio clips from participants’ stories. The Quilt and any additional work produced will be displayed in a community event and displayed in local libraries across the borough.
This project aims to bring people of different ages and backgrounds together to create a quilt that captures the past, present and future of life in Bolton. The production of a quilt, joining people's work, lives and stories together is a symbol of unity and the act of working together as a group will help to break down negative notions of difference and create a stronger sense of community amongst some of the most isolated and marginalised people in our town.
Sessions are completely free and all materials will be provided. There will be a group outing to Chadwich Resource Centre to look at their collection of related textiles and equipment. Sessions will be held at Elderdale Community Centre in Breightmet which is equipped with 7 sewing machines, plenty of material and other supplies. The Centre is disability accessible with some parking. If you have additional needs, please get in touch and we will make accommodations.
