Live from Worktown |
We are a community-based organisation who are working towards CIC status. Founded in 2014 we promote heritage, culture and arts activities that build on and contribute to Bolton’s identity and resilience. We have run Arts and Music Festivals and in 2018/19 created a Bill Naughton Festival celebrating the life and work of Bolton’s most successful author. We work in partnership with many others including Bolton Libraries and Museums Service, University of Bolton, schools and specialist interest groups (eg Bolton Documentary Photography). We are funded from a range of sources including private sponsorship, donations and fund-raising, Bolton’s Community Fund and the National Lottery (HLF and ACE). Before Covid we organised monthly Cultural Cabaret Nights (at Courtyard 36) and Modern Jazz Nights (at the Olympus Restaurant). Since/during Covid we created a number of on-line events and activities including a series of on-line walks, a monthly literary magazine ‘Worktown Words’, and events celebrating World Poetry Day and the launch of Poetry from the Platform (an anthology of work from Boltonians aged from 8 to 80, celebrating the completion of the adaptations to Platform 5 to create community-run meeting and exhibition facilities). We are now (June 2021) working with disability and other groups to get access to Winter Hill as part of the Winter Hill 125 Mass Trespass commemoration in September. We also plan a Writing for Performance Festival in October. |

Services include a helpline, one to one support, recovery courses, groups and activities. We are opening a Community Cafe to reduce social isolation, and for people to develop skills in hospitality and catering. Although specialising in working with people with mood disorders, the charity supports people with other forms of emotional distress. All their work centres around recovery, which means ‘living the best life you can with, or without, the symptoms of emotional distress’. Their aim is to help people develop a better understanding of their symptoms, to manage them and strive to achieve the things they want in life regardless of their difficulties. |

RECLAIM |
The aim of our programme is to help break down social barriers that young children face coming from working class backgrounds. Our leadership programme involves pairing 30 children from Bolton St Catherine's Academy in Years 8 & 9, each with a mentor for guidance and support. Hence, we are looking for 30 mentors from any discipline to mentor these students. Any adult is eligible to mentor one of the Bolton St Catherine students as we provide 3 training sessions and DBS checks free of charge. With the way things are currently, we are currently aiming for 18 hours of mentoring. At a rate of 1 hour of mentoring per week, this brings us to a total of 18 weeks; hence 18 hours of mentoring in just over 4 months. The three training sessions are scheduled to last 1.5 hours each and we also aim to carry out 1 session per week, so this should amount to three weeks in total for training in the following modules: 1) Barriers for working-class young people Training is likely to be done online, in the evening (to avoid clashing with schedules) but we will be sending out a consensus to learn the best times for everyone. The exact dates for training will be confirmed once we confirm when we can begin the mentorship programme. There is a possibility that the programme may be run online depending on what kind of restrictions will be in place as we move through the year. Our preference is that sessions take place face-to-face as some children may not be fully equipped to fully enjoy the online experience, however, if restrictions are still in place, we will run the program online. |
