Voluntary and community groups in Greater Manchester with new ideas for helping their local areas are invited to apply for small grants from the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester.

The Seed Fund will give priority to new and emerging groups that have been in existence for less than 12 months and/or have an income of less than £5,000. The maximum grant is £1,000.

Only groups based in the 10 local authority districts of Greater Manchester are eligible.

The Government will set up a fund to foster the creation of community groups in deprived areas, Francis Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office, has disclosed. Revenue for the fund will come from the £200 million Futurebuilders programme, whose closure had been announced earlier by Civil Society minister, Nick Hurd.

Maude said the new Communities First fund would provide start-up funding for community groups in disadvantaged parts of the country. He did not say how much the fund was worth or when it would open.

As you may now be aware, the Government has announced their intention to remodel the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) back to proportionate, common sense levels. As a result, the ISA registration phase of the scheme has now been stopped and therefore will not launch on 26 July 2010.

Do you engage with young people from local schools? Would you like to explore the possibility of working with young people age 14-16?

You may be already aware of the work that the vinvolved teams carry out in helping to develop opportunities and support young people age 16-25 into volunteering.The vschools initiative seeks to extend this support to students in our local schools. As part of the Youth Community Action Programme launched in March 2010, their aim is to inspire all 14-16 year olds to give their time and get involved in activities that will benefit the community.

At the recent Bolton and Bury Business Awards, The BIG Bolton Fund won the Community Award.

The fifth annual Bolton and Bury Business Awards attracted about 500 local entrepreneurs to the De Vere Whites Hotel last Thursday night.

The glittering black-tie event was packed as the winners of 11 separate categories of awards, along with a surprise Special Achievement award, were announced by BBC North West Tonight weather presenter Dianne Oxberry.
